Meet my lion family: My husband, Jeff Anderson, my 11 year old son, Andrew Anderson, and my 5 year old son, Anthony Anderson, who will be in Kindergarten this year here at Brooke. While we are current residents of Buda, my husband and I are true Native Austinites born and raised. We both attended Casis Elementary, O. Henry Jr. High, and Austin High School as did our grandparents. I also attended Zavala Elementary down the street from Brooke. In 2002, we moved to Hawaii where I was recruited to teach special education at an under served elementary school. Our oldest son, Andrew, was actually born in Hawaii. Upon our return to Texas in 2004, I went back to teaching for AISD.
This is my 2nd year at Brooke Elementary, and my will be my 17th year teaching. After graduating from UTSA in 1994, I began my career in education in 1997 as a teaching assistant with the Eanes district and went on to become a special education teacher with AISD in 1998. In 2011, I received my Master Reading Teacher certification through Region 13 and worked as the Primary Reading Specialist at Widen Elementary. I also had the opportunity to teach with Hays CISD as a Math Interventionist.
However, I am most excited about coming back to Brooke as your Literacy/Dyslexia Specialist. I am even more excited about continuing the BLS program I have been trained in to support our students with Dyslexia as well as our other struggling readers. The Dyslexia program is called: Basic Language Skills. It is a comprehensive, systematic, multi-sensory reading program that includes instruction in all the 5 components of reading: phonolocial/phonemic awareness decoding/phonics fluency vocabulary comprehension It also contains a cursive handwriting and spelling component. I will be using this program with some of my 3rd and 4th grade groups.
Another program I implement with my 5th grade groups is called: REWARDS. It focuses on teaching students how to decode or read longer multisyllabic words that contain prefixes and suffixes as well as how to understand their meanings.
